#TBT to That Time Our NONA Bag Saved the Day

#TBT to That Time Our NONA Bag Saved the Day

As much as we know that kids impact every aspect of our lives and we plan around it, (like my dream home complete with all-white interiors that will just have to live on my pinterest board, never to become a reality) we are all also guilty of having those moments where we think we can avoid the pitfalls that accompany parenthood (usually these thoughts start with "when i have kids, they are never going to...) and then a short while later we are eating said words. This usually turns into a battle between having nice things versus purely practical.

For Thanksgiving weekend, we rented a house in the countryside which required a long and very windey journey to reach our destination. Of course, I brought my Nona bag because I basically never leave the house without it and this time it was doing double duty as my diaper bag and also my weekender bag- one of the perks of going on a tropical vacation is the ease of packing flip flops/bathing suit and calling it good. The bag sat securely between 2 carseats so I could easily access whatever I needed from the front passenger seat. All was well until my older toddler got carsick. Several times. Luckily, the vomit seemed to be contained to his carseat and clothes, but of course I did a quick inspection of the bag to make sure 'she' was ok and all seemed fine so we cleaned up what we could and finished the voyage in the puke-mobile.

Upon arrival though, I realized that somehow some of the mess made it's way into the interior of my bag. How this happened, I still don't understand as it seemed to defy science and logic. The exterior fabric and leather were completely clean! It was just another example of my best-laid plans going awry and ultimately what I have learned after several years with young children is that sometimes puke (or blood or what I like to call "miscallaneous" just happens).  Had this been any other luxury bag, I would have been beside myself but all I had to do was zip out the removable insert, give it a quick wipe with some mild soap and water, and voila- good as new. It also helped that the bag has a 2nd layer of water-resistant lining, which prevented any liquid from seeping through to the outer leather.

Life gets messy whether you are a parent or not. As much as I would love to have that precious white upholstered furniture, I know that I can't handle the emotional roller-coaster that goes along with every mark and stain that will inevitably show up. When Bea and I started working on the concept of NONA, it was equally as important that the bag be functional in addition to looking like a luxury tote. While good care and maintenance will go a long way, we understand that accidents happen. We designed a bag that can handle the craziness of life. This is just an one example of how I put my bag to the test nearly every day. The more it delivers, the more indispensable it is to me. I don't leave home without it, and from now on, maybe some dramamine too.

The Ultimate 2017 Holiday Gift Guide is Here!

By Tammy Woeppel

The Ultimate 2017 Holiday Gift Guide is Here!

It's hard to believe that the 2017 Holiday Season is in full swing already (I am totally guilty of starting on the black friday sales)  but with that comes the age old question of what to buy?!?! Here's a little list of the things that the 'she' in your life will be super pscyhed to find under the tree this year.

#Ihavethisthingwiththrowblankets...and throw pillows, and chairs, and rugs...you get the idea- a fun home decor gift is always welcomed! These cozy options from Etsy and RH are just what the doctor ordered for the chilly months to come!

I was recently introduced to these candles by a friend and was instantly hooked. The story behind Keap and their hand-poured candles is really cool, not to mention the glasses are easy to clean for repurposing (they suggest as a whiskey tumbler but I'm in need of make up brush storage) once the candle has burned down.

Sometimes you just need to be surrounded by pretty things. These geode coasters definitely fit the bill.

This robe from Parachute Home is also perfect for the 'him' in your life.

A great sidekick for the aforementioned robe- comes in multiple colors from J Crew.

Simple yet delicious vegan recipes for even the most carnivorous eaters from Oh How She Glows blogger-turned-cookbook author. While I don't practice that lifestyle, I am trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into the routine and having inspiration is key.

A portable wine bottle for the vino-lovers out there. Just add a bottle of wine and a set of the matching wine tumblers and you have a themed gift that is sure to please.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Corry, the founder of Mamo Botanics, and learned all about the wondrous Cacay Nut (bottom line, you're going to want this stuff- it's an anti-aging powerhouse!). Read more about the benefits of this magic potion and the mission of Mamo here.

Perfect for the new mama in your life. Leave it to Cosabella to design a practical nursing bra that looks like an expensive lingerie piece.

The softest, prettiest blush take on a classic.

If her philosophy, like mine, is rose gold errthang.

Varley's line of athleisure is cute enough to motivate anyone to get on those New Year's resolutions come January!

Super chic and expensive looking earrings from Tres Almas but with an artisanal twist AND they come in multiple colors.

So there ya have it. Make your mama feel special and happy, because let's be real, life is just better when our mama's are happy! Also, don't forget what could be the best gift of all, a NONA Signature Baby Bag! Our Black Friday weekend sale gets you 15% off plus free shipping through Cyber monday. Just use discount code BLACKFRIDAY at check out. Enjoy, and you're welcome! xx.

The Coats Every Fashion Girl is Coveting This Season

By Tammy Woeppel

The Coats Every Fashion Girl is Coveting This Season
As we head into the holiday season, you may be looking for outerwear inspo either because your wardrobe is lacking in the topper category or because Santa wants to know what's on your list. Here is a list of my current faves and most are bump-friendly to boot (I could have gone on all day but had to try and keep it reasonable!). As always, NONA believes that 1 thing you really love and will wear for years to come is better than several 'meh' styles that end up collecting dust, so choose thoughtfully!

The Wrap:

For me, wrap coats can easily look bathrobe-ish if the shawl collar is too big and the length isn't just right. Some people can really pull that look off, but lemme tell you something- hair and make up better be ON POINT otherwise it just translates to hot mess...or you have to be french with the "i woke up like this" perfectly undone topknot and flawless skin. Since neither my hair nor I are of french-girl origin, I tend to gravitate towards something more polished (almost a cross between a robe coat and a trench coat), that can easily be styled for a more dressy look or with jeans/white tee, and some chucks.

In love with this RL style and want it in every color!
The sharply-angled belt ends on this Geroge Simonton number make it stand out.

Mackage always hits the balance between classic and edgy with their hardware and leather trim details.
Super cute neutral plaid in a no-print-print (did you follow that?). IMO, this is like an animal print topper- it should really count as a neutral and get thrown over EVERYTHING.

The Oversized/Cocoon Coat:

Otherwise known as a total man-repeller silhouette, this is the coat you need after an indulgent Thanksgiving dinner. Let's be honest though, we dress for other girls, not men and I am A-ok with explaining to my husband for the millionth time "it's fashion, honey".
Everlane is just old faithful at this point. Love their mission, their transparency, and most importantly, their selection. Please note that you really do need to size down on this though in order to look like you are wearing the coat and not the reverse.
The coolest menswear option and love the slit sleeve- this is styled to perfection, just add a pair of white chanel loafers  (ok ok, or maybe these great subs from j crew).
Can't go wrong with a good teddy bear coat. I included the Max Mara splurge that I kinda die over  as well as the more budget versions here and here. Not Your Standard Blog also talked about her fave recently.

The Anorak/Parka

So easy to style. Layer with a chunky sweater, denim, boots of choice (sorel, gianvito rossi, etc., doesn't matter) and you're done!
Just enough details with the slanted pockets, the swingey shape, and the drawstring.
If you are looking to spend $$$$ on an anorak, here's your girl! The grommeted belts, metallic lining, and fishtail hem make this cooler than the average.
So sleek, chic, and versatile with 3-in-1 options.

Cape/Poncho:

Definitely the most forgiving silhouette, mine carried me through the 3rd trimester in one of the worst NE winter seasons, but also provided enough ventilation so that when I got completely sweaty/out of breath from walking 10 feet, I didn't pass out from heatstroke. #winning!

The belted waist on this Mackage provides definition and shape if a regular schmatta cape isn't your thing (also looks super cute tied above a bump!).

Super cute with military details (and if money is no object, pierre balmain & burberry have more options).

Bomber:

This silhouette is here to stay- another great dress up/dress down layering piece and also perfect for those days that aren't completely arctic but there is still a nip in the air. Would be so cute over a body con midi dress and either stack heel boots or your favorite pair of sneakers.
A sophisticated take on the classic.
A little shimmer and shine if you're feeling bold.
Puffer:
Not always easy to find a puffer that you actually feel cute in but so necessary when the temps take a dive.
I'm really loving aether apparel's 'basic-yet-not' feel whether it's outerwear, sweaters, or their activewear.
And a super cute convertible maternity-to-post-baby option from Motherhood Maternity.
The Arrival's outerwear game is super strong. You'll wear this classic puffer forever (if you can get past their amazing leather jackets!)- look for their longer version to be restocked soon as well.

Heavy Duty/Chunky Sweaters:

Ok so I may be pushing it just a teensy bit counting these as outerwear but come on, how cute and necessary are these Mums Handmade chunky sweaters?! Loving both the pullover style as well as the cardigan!
So many amazing coats out there, and while we may not be excited for the freezing cold temps, at least there are cute ways to brave it! Did we miss any of your faves? Let us know what's keeping you warm!
x! Tammy

The Path and the Process

By Tammy Woeppel

The Path and the Process

Bea and I have discussed blogging, and we are both in agreement that it's a total must-do for a small online business such as ourselves. Only problem is, neither of us have really felt psyched enough about it to just bust out our laptop and start writing. Something we are psyched on, however, is honesty and transparency in businesses, so with that, we were inspired to follow through. We'd like to start by walking you through our process. Go-forward, we hope to use this platform as a destination for all things fashionable mommy: fabulous maternity and post-partum fashion, nursery ideas, birthday party inspo (is anyone else completely intimidated by the circus that kid's bday parties have recently become?!), baby registry must-haves, etc.

First things first though! A little explanation on what we mean when we say that we are an "Eco-Conscious" Brand. When we conceived the idea for NONA, we nonchalantly decided that the bags should be "Eco-Friendly". Super easy, right? We would just use all organic materials, and we would be super socially responsible: using a domestic factory which would be subject to USA labor laws and would have fair working conditions, not to mention we wouldn't have to worry about the child labor factor. When I look back on how  'easy' we thought the plan was, it is just comical. For starters, it literally lengthened the process of getting the bags on the market by at least 3 years, if not more. Had we just used all conventional materials, it would have made our lives significantly easier. Going green is something that the fashion industry has dabbled in. I remember my time as a DKNY Jeans merchandiser when we started a collection of bamboo-based materials 10+ years ago. But fashion itself is not a hi-tech, pioneering industry and is in fact, pretty wasteful. The entire industry exists to get you to buy more, and in turn produces more to support this demand which in turn uses more raw materials, creating more waste/pollution, etc. There are other damaging side-effects as well (an eye-opening watch if you're so inclined, is The True Cost, which touches on the 2012 Bangladeshi Tazreen Fashions fire that killed 100+ employees). So, while there are certainly more brands building sustainable practices into their business models, like The Reformation and Amour Vert, we have a long way to go (looking at you Forever 21!). At our tiny start-up level, the factories that we approached to help us source these magical organic materials looked at us like we had 3 heads. We were on our own to find everything separately and come back when we were ready to make a bag as they couldn't be bothered or just didn't know where to source the materials. And it would cost an insane amount once we were ready, btw. Nevertheless, we forged ahead and began to search for the needles in the haystack with a moderate amount of success.

Fast forward to 2014 and I had put the bag development on hold temporarily while I was pregnant with my first baby, selling our house, learning Spanish from scratch, and preparing for an international move to Bogota, Colombia. And yes, I realized the irony of expecting my first child but not having a diaper bag of my own to use! But, I digress. After getting my bearings in my new city, I decided it was time to pick up where I had left off and get back to work. After having too many disappointments trying to work with US manufacturers (too pricey or too disinterested), we found a Colombian-based factory that was willing to take us on and the task of finding everything we still needed. Halle-freaking-lujah! Still clinging to our GOTS-certified dreams, we spent some time searching for these unicorns and then one day we had a come-to-jesus moment. Either lower our expectations and get the bag done already or spend the rest of our lives working on a perfectly eco-friendly version. It wasn't our idyllic original concept, but we knew there was only 1 way to go. Put out our product or don't. Simple as that. We also changed our perspective. Was it better to use an organic fabric that had been woven in 1 facility, shipped to another to get dyed, then transported to a final warehouse before it was purchased and shipped yet again or find an ethical supplier locally that did everything in house and could eliminate uneccesary transportation, even if the fabric wasn't organic?

We also knew that we were creating something more sustainable just from putting out a bag that truly doesn't look like a diaper bag. It's an investment bag that happens to function great for packing up the baby gear but is also an all-around amazing carryall that can be used for the gym, running errands, a carry-on for plane trips, a weekender bag, etc. It has life way beyond a baby bag. I have friends with multiple children and each child brought along a new diaper bag (not cheap!) and then they stop carrying it as soon as humanly possible because their bags scream "BABY!". We need to stop buying quantity over quality. Pick the 1 amazing thing you love and will wear forever and spend a little more on it, instead of grabbing something just because it's on final markdown and who cares if you only wear it once. Marie is totally right (Kondo, that is)- I need to see the sparks of joy!

Back to bags...what we did decide to stick to our guns on though, was to make sure that we knew where every single component came from and that we could stand behind the supplier and their processes. For example, our textile mill has an entire sustainability initiative built into their corporate culture. They have invested in special machinery to reduce their consumption of water as well as recycling it when possible. They plant trees every year and impose limits on their output of air/noise pollution. They created a foundation that builds homes for those less fortunate. In a nutshell, they do a bunch of stuff to positively impact the earth, the surrounding communities, as well as their own employees. Also, it is possible that we will be able to work with the supplier on developing a fabric to our own specifications in the future (ie, using recycled materials, etc). I visit our factory on a regular basis. It is large and light-filled, all the employees work business hours and take their lunch breaks and some of their kids swing by after school while they wait for their parents to finish up. It feels like a family at this point. I could go on and on but the point is that we really made an effort to pick the best possible partners, and we are super proud of that. And of course, we will always strive to continuously improve and do better.
